Abstract

This paper presents a typical application of diesel engine waste heat recovery for drying the clay mineral; bentonite. The industrial use of bentonite and the problems associated with high moisture contents are summarized. The drying rate of bentonite was experimentally investigated for different material sizes, weight per unit area and drying air temperature. The experimental results were correlated and used for the design and the analysis of the developed drying system. In addition, the effect of bentonite production rate on the amount of moisture removal and crying heat requirements are presented. The developed waste heat recovery system is simple, economical and produces no negative effect on the engine performance.
