Abstract

In this letter, a new wideband dielectric-loaded TM01–TE11 mode converter is proposed. It is shown that a new hexagon metallic sheet (HMS) placed in the middle of a circular waveguide has a lower reflection of the TM01 mode compared to a rectangular metallic sheet. Using such HMS in the structure of dielectric-loaded TM01–TE11 mode converters can enhance the operational bandwidth significantly. Four cases of mode converters with/without the HMS are designed and evaluated. The results demonstrate a noticeable bandwidth enhancement for the structure with HMS. Using the proposed structure, an excellent operational bandwidth of 25.4% is achieved. The proposed mode converters were 3-D printed and the mode conversion was verified by measuring the far-field radiation patterns.
