Abstract

The rights of the crime victim in the administration of Justice in South Africa. A historical overview of the status of the crime victim in the administration of justice shows that the victim has not always been forgotten in the criminal justice system. Through the years, the interest in the victim of crime has varied significantly. During the Middle Ages, when the state gradually took over compensation, the interest in the crime victim declined. It is only during the last four decades that the victim has started to emerge from the background. The victim has certain rights and the question arises what the current status of the victim in the administration of justice in South-Africa is. In this article the rights of the victim are identified. The current process in the administration of justice and some aspects of the Criminal Law regarding these rights of the victim are evaluated from a criminological point of view. S. Afr. J.. Sociol. 1986,17(4): 148–154
