Abstract

Each arteriovenous anastomosis leads to systemic and regional changes of hemodynamics which are varying from asymptomatic to severe clinical symptoms. Additional to the peripheral localization, the small diameter of the arteriovenous anastomosis, cardiac reserve and the reduction of the peripheral resistance, a protective stenosis of the shunt vein often is an important module to prevent high-output failure and a peripheral steal syndrome.
