Abstract

The uptake of35SO4−− by aerial roots ofEpidendrum was investigated using microautoradiographic techniques. During a 30 min application to the velamen the isotope is transported through the cortex and the passage cells of the endodermis and pericycle and accumulated into the protoxylem vessels. The results are discussed with regard to the general problem of ion uptake into the xylem.
