Abstract

This essay analyses the historical development as well as the present condition of German linguistics in the Republic of Korea. — The first Department of German studies was established in 1946, but the history of German linguistics in Korea did not start earlier than 1966. Shortly there after, this discipline gained a firm position as a part of German studies. Presently, however, German studies in Korea are experiencing a crisis. Among practical strategies for problem solving in the field of German linguistics, these might figure: 1) further development of didactical methods and textbooks explicitly for Koreans and Korean needs; 2) establishing interdisciplinary classes in fields such as judicial technical language; and 3) establishing translation that really prepares their graduates for their jobs. Time is running out for Korean scholars of German studies to set up reforms not from the outside but according to their own aims and needs.
