Abstract

BackgroundReturn to pre-injury level of sport after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery is influenced by psychological factors. For their assessment a kneespecific scale (ACL-Return to sport after injury (RSI)) has been developed. PurposeAim of the study was to translate the scale from English, to validate the German version and to examine it‘s clinical significance. Materials and MethodsFor the translation the “cross cultural adaptation process” was applied, validity determined and clinically applied to 39 patients six months postoperatively. “Receiver Operating Characteristic” (ROC) analysis was used to evaluate the cut-off point as predictive parameter for return to pre-injury level of sport. ResultsThe translated scale is easily applicable, has good internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.954), good construct validity, no floor, but ceiling effects. The cut-off point to discriminate between patients who did or did not return to sport amounted 51.3 points (sensitivity 0.97, specificity 0.63). ConclusionsThe German version of the ACL-RSI scale is able to differentiate between patients who did or did not return to sport six month postoperatively. The scale can be used as predictive parameter for return to pre-injury level of sport.
