Abstract
Abstract The word “diaspora,” which like so many Greek words entered European languages, derives from diaspeiro (the verb meaning “to spread”). As a technical term referring to societies that stem from one nation or “ethnos” and dwell among foreign nations, the word occurs in the Hebrew Bible several times (e.g., Deuteronomy 28:64; Jeremiah 30:11). In its appearances in the Bible, the term Pezura (Hebrew for Diaspora) when it relates to the people of Israel usually has a heavy theological overtone.
