Abstract

Abstract Antenatal fetal growth was assessed by serial ultrasonic cephalometry in 406 patients whose fetus was considered to be at risk from placental failure. When the growth-rate of the fetal biparietal diameter was below the 5th percentile, 82% of babies were below the 10th percentile of weight for gestation and 68% were below the 5th percentile. Retarded ultrasonic growth-rates were associated with a significant increase in the number of low Apgar scores, perinatal deaths, and gross fetal anomalies. Serial ultrasonic cephalometry is an important aid in the diagnosis of the fetus at risk from chronic placental insufficiency.
