Abstract

Besides other methods, rapid and precise error detection and diagnosis are useful procedures to increase service quality in complex production systems, such as FMS. An expert system and an on-line linkage between the process and supervision level are helpful aids for analysing faults and failures. In hierarchical automation structures, i.e. supervision computer, cell computers and controls, specific requirements in which the data structures of the error messages and that of the information- technical message handling have to take into consideration when integrating a knowledge based diagnostic system. On the one hand, the detection and transmission of messages must orientate themselves to the function control level ( e.g. messages are not allowed to get mislaid) and on the other hand, the specific requirements of a knowledge based diagnostic system have to be also taken into account. This paper describes several aspects of an on-line integration of a knowledge based diagnostic system in a hierarchical automation structure of a FMS, which is installed at the machine tool laboratory of the technical university of Aachen.
