Abstract

Actinomycosis is a chronic, pyogenic granulomatous disease that sometimes forms an inflammatory mass in the abdomen. Surgery often is performed for diagnosis as well as for cure, because the disease process frequently is mistaken for a malignant neoplasm. A case is reported of intra-abdominal actinomycosis that was diagnosed before surgery by colonoscopy. In addition to the identification of a sulfur granule, biopsy specimens obtained at colonoscopy resulted in drainage of purulent material into the colon.
