Abstract

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is one of the most common malignant tumors of the salivary glands and occurs particularly in the parotid gland. With respect to its intraoral manifestation, the posterior hard and soft palates are the predominant sites. Clinically, it presents as a nodular lesion of fibrous consistency. Eventually, a color alteration may be observed. Recognition of its clinical features is essential to establish an early diagnosis and improve the prognosis. Three patients were referred for evaluation of a submucosal nodular mass with blue-red coloration on the hard palate, clinically suggestive of salivary gland tumor, particularly mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Incisional biopsies were performed, and in 2 of these patients, the microscopic diagnosis was vascular lesions. In the third case, a drainage of purulent material was observed, leading to a diagnosis of abscess of unknown origin. The patients are in follow-up and do not show clinical evidence of any alteration.
