Abstract

In a previous publication we noted that the incidence of hypocalcemia on the first day of life was significantly higher in infants born to mothers who had abnormal pregnancies, labor, or both.<sup>1</sup>In this group, diabetes mellitus in the mother played a prominent role. We therefore investigated the incidence of hypocalcemia on the. first day of life in infants born to diabetic mothers and to mothers who were found to have a prediabetic state during pregnancy.* We also made simultaneous observations on some other constituents of the blood. <h3>Patient Material and Methods</h3> The infants were divided into two groups. Group I consisted of 22 infants born to diabetic mothers whose diabetic state had been recognized for periods varying between 1 and 18 years. All mothers of this group of infants received insulin, but no other hormones. All but two infants were delivered by cesarean section. Group II contained 36
