Abstract

In order to eliminate interference as a result of existing neighboring communication systems within the ultra wide band (UWB) frequency band, a compact microstrip fed band notchedUWB patch antenna with band rejection features is proposed. The overall dimension of patch antenna is 27 mm × 19 mm × 1.6 mm. The planar UWB antenna is modified with a defective ground plane to achieve band rejection. The antenna includes a rectangular patch etched on FR4 epoxy substrate (dielectric constant 4.4 and height 1.5 mm) with partial ground plane and 50 Ω feed line. For improving the impedance matching over a UWB frequency range two square shaped cut slots are incorporated at one diagonal corner of the patch. The simulated result shows that the covered bandwidth at S 11 < −10 dB is 3.5–8.7 GHz. Then, the DGS incorporated at the UWB patch antenna rejects the WLAN 5–6 GHz band successfully. The VSWR of the band rejected antenna is less than 2 except at the rejected band 5–6 GHz.
