Abstract
Drilling in the Permian basin increased in all categories during 1972. Exploratory drilling was up 20.1% and development was up 6.8%. Exploratory success declined 1.3% from 1971, whereas the development success rate rose 0.9%. Crude oil production was up 5.43% in 1972 from 1971. This amounts to 37,758,433 bbl. The most active exploration areas were the Delaware basin and the Northwest shelf, with Eddy County, New Mexico, being especially active. Rank wildcat drilling in remote basins was also noteworthy. Seismic activity was down 25.6% in West Texas and up 6.4% in eastern New Mexico, a 19.4% overall decrease. Leasing saw a general increase over 1971 throughout the Permian basin.
