Abstract
In Illinois 1,832 wells were reported drilled for oil and gas in 1961, a decrease of 4.7% from the 1,922 total reported in 1960. These figures are exclusive of water- or gas-input wells, salt-water disposal wells, old wells worked over, and an undetermined number of oil wells drilled in secondary recovery projects. Exploratory drilling decreased 21.9% from 661 wells (FOOTNOTE 3) in 1960 to 516 in 1961. Fifteen new pools, 45 extensions, and 25 new pays in pools were discovered in 1961. Total oil production decreased from 77,341,000 bbls. in 1960 to 77,117,000 bbls. in 1961. Of the 15 new pools discovered in 1961, 9 oil and 3 gas pools produced from Mississippian sandstones and limestones, 1 oil pool from limestone of Devonian age, and 2 from carbonate of Silurian age.
