Abstract
In Illinois 2,032 wells were drilled for oil and gas in 1959, a decrease of 12.7% compared with the 2,291 total in 1958. These figures are exclusive of water- or gas-input wells, salt-water disposal wells, and old wells worked over. Exploratory drilling decreased 16.3%, from 639 wells (FOOTNOTE 3) in 1958 to 535 in 1959. Fourteen new pools, 43 extensions, and 31 new pays in producing areas were discovered in 1959. Total oil production decreased from 80,779,000 bbls. in 1958 to 76,727,000 bbls. in 1959. Of the 14 new pools discovered in 1959, 3 produced from Pennsylvanian sandstones, 8 from Mississippian sandstones and limestone, 1 from sandstone of Devonian age, and 2 from dolomite of Silurian age.
