Abstract

1. 1. Alkaline phosphatase activity in the small intestine increases 30–60-fold during the last 4 days of gestation. 2. 2. The preweaning increase in duodenal phosphatase begins earlier and proceeds more gradually than in mice and rats, paralleling early utilization of the adult diet in this 3. 3. The rite of highest activity changes with age: in foetuses and infants up to 12 days of age it is the fourth tenth, from 12 to 35 days the first tenth, and in adults the second tenth (from the pylorus).
