Abstract
Development research seems well established in Norway. There is no need to justify this research in terms of its impact on Norway's development policies and practices: the field should have—and has—a much broader justification, it is argued. Secondly, while there are good reasons to maintain a specific term for ‘development studies’, this may no longer be necessary when globalisation within research makes it natural to mainstream perspectives and issues relating to the developing world. Thirdly, the authors seek to challenge the research community to reflect further on how to maintain and improve the quality of Norwegian development research.
