Abstract

The silane coating has been developed for poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) used as silane precursor by the sol–gel method. The coating is further modified with silver nanoparticles suspension (SNpS). Silver nanoparticles suspension (SNpS) used for this purpose has been synthesized by electrochemical discharge method in an aqueous medium. In sol–gel coating, water is used as media; hence, to synthesize antimicrobial sol, the SNpS has been added as water media with 30 and 60 ppm concentration of nanosilver. The sols have been applied on plain and scratch transparent PMMA sheets and another one with the scratch coloured sheet. The SNpS has been characterized by UV–visible spectroscopy for the confirmation of nanosilver synthesis. The coating has been characterized for mechanical properties, chemical resistance and optical properties. The antimicrobial properties have been evaluated by Bactaslyde\(^{\mathrm{TM}}\) kit, and it is observed that at 60 ppm the complete bactericidal effect has been observed. In optical properties, it is observed that with the application of the coating on a scratch surface, the scratches can be easily hidden and optical property of deteriorated sheet was enhanced. This is proven by photographic reference as well as by % transmittance measurement. Hence, this coating is a value addition for the waste scratch PMMA sheet as well as enhances the mechanical performance of plain as well as scratch PMMA surface. With the addition of SNpS, the antimicrobial effect can be developed.
