Abstract
The belief that septohippocampal axons invade the hippocampal formation beginning at postnatal day 4 is based on histochemical and biochemical determinations of cholinergic markers. In the present study, injections of bisbenzimide, a fluorescent marker which is transported retrogradely, were made into the hippocampal formation at various ages beginning at birth. The extensive perikaryal labeling in the septum reveals that septal axons are present in the hippocampal formation as early as the day of birth, several days before their transmitter nature is established in the hippocampal formation.
