Abstract

Connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies have demonstrated great potential for safety, mobility, environmental, and social benefits. Multiple test beds have been deployed throughout the world to investigate and develop CAV-related applications. Information sharing between CAVs and road infrastructure is receiving significant attention. The Traffic Operations and Safety (TOPS) Laboratory in the UW–Madison College of Engineering has partnered with the city of Madison and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) to develop a connected corridor as a test bed for CAV and cooperative driving automation (CDA) technologies. In this work, we present an overview of the system architecture, implementation, and operation of the data pipeline system. The system is designed to collect, process, extract, and store real-time data collected and transmitted by the roadside units (RSUs) deployed at the intersections in the connected corridor. A virtual edge computing design is implemented in the data pipeline’s system architecture to enhance the system’s reliability and scalability. The system modules, dataflows, and data visualization are also discussed. The data archived by the data pipeline system will be used for future CAV and CDA applications. The successful implementation of the current prototype is easily transferable and applicable to other connected corridors of a similar nature that will be operated in the future.
