Abstract

This paper presents the development of a permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) with followed switch-mode rectifier (SMR) and performs its performance enhancement operation controls. First, the derated characteristics of a PMSG employing various followed AC-DC converters are comparatively assessed. Accordingly, the Vienna SMR is established and served as the interface converter of the developed PMSG. And the simple robust control is applied to enhance its control performance. Next, the brushless DC generator (BDCG) mode and the conventional SMR power factor corrected (PFC) mode for operating a PMSG are analyzed to comprehend their limitations and improvement strategies. Finally, a simple position sensorless control scheme for PMSG is developed. Some measured results are provided to demonstrate the performances of the established PMSG being operated as a conventional generator and a wind generator.
