Abstract
Forgiveness is essential for marital relationships due to emotional recovery after a hurtful event caused by his/her spouse. Adapted forgiveness scales were used in the studies about marital forgiveness in Turkey (e.g., Bugay & Demir, 2010; Durmus & Manap,2018; Erkan, 2015; Ozgun, 2010). However, the marital forgiveness scale has not been developed in Turkish culture. Therefore, the present study aimed to develop a specific scale for Turkish culture, which is essential in cultural sensitivity. Factor analysis revealed three subscales: avoidance, desire for revenge, and benevolence. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the structure of the scale. The reliability analysis was examined with the Cronbach Alpa coefficient. Cronbach coefficient value for each dimension was between .82 and .93. Rumination was used to examine the criterion-related validity of the scale. The Marital Offense Specific Forgiveness Scale (MOFS), the severity of the offense, and the significance of the offense were used to test the convergent validity of the scale. Pearson Correlation Coefficient analysis revealed significant correlations between rumination, MOFS, the severity of offenses, the significance of offense, and the developed scale. Findings showed that the developed Marital Forgiveness Scale was a reliable and valid measurement of marital forgiveness.
