Abstract
A 30 m prototype of 100 MVA (66 kV-1 kA) high temperature superconducting (HTSC) power cable system was developed for the first time ever. This system consists of a 30 m long single phase cable, terminations, a 66 kV XLPE cable for a current loop, and a closed cycle liquid nitrogen cooling system. After being cooled down, 40 kV-1 kA AC was successfully applied in sub-cooled liquid nitrogen (72 K, 1.2 kg/cm/sup 2//sub abs/) regardless of mechanical stress, such as handling in the factory, transportation, laying and the axial force due to contraction during cooling down.
