Abstract

Abstract. Introduction. Researchers have shown that the products of modern culture have influence on students and may be used in foreign languages classes to develop student’s foreign language communicative competence. The article includes the analysis of foreign languages teaching by means of comic books, which contain both linguistic and extralinguistic information and develop all the components of foreign language communicative competence of the students. Purpose. To investigate comic strips as both the example of creolized text and a means of foreign languages teaching in the Ukrainian tertiary institutions. Methods. Reviewing the studies on the history of graphic literature and its creolized nature with the view of finding out the advantages of its usage in the foreign language classes. Results. Both verbal and graphical components of the comic strips can be used on all the levels of development of the foreign language communicative competence and serve as the sources of extralinguistic information about the foreign language that is studied. The ways of improving foreign language classes in higher school have been introduced. In addition, it has been explained how to create some new comic strips by means of modern technical facilities with their further application while forming communicative competence in the context of teaching foreign languages to the students of philological specialities. Conclusion. To sum up, it was found that comic strips used while teaching foreign languages have a very high educational potential due to their multilateral nature.
