Abstract

Fiber-Optic Gyro (FOG) is an inertial rotation sensor, which can realize a high sensitivity around the earth revolution rate with respect to the sun. The first generation FOG consists of a long length sensing-fiber-coil. This configuration, Interferometer FOG, has already been used for navigation units in the newest aircraft, Boeing 777, control of Japanese scientific rockets, and so on. Beside these traditional applications of the gyro, FOGs have newly created industrial applications, for example, car navigation, antenna/camera stabilizer and crane controller, utilizing the features, such as maintenance free and short warm-up time. Other configurations have also been studied. Resonator FOG may realize a high sensitivity with a shorter length of the fiber coil. Brillouin FOG is an active type FOG having a fiber ring laser with Brillouin scattering as a laser gain. Fiber-Optic Gyro technologies have promoted widespread advances in traditional gyro applications and developed entirely new fields.
