Abstract

ABSTRACT A novel fiber resonator configuration is proposed to reduce the drift due to polarizationfluctuation for a cheap resonator fiber optic gyro (R-FOG) having medium grade performance. The resonator can be made of an ordinary single mode fiber. Influence of drift sources has been considered, and it is confirmed that the configuration shows medium grade performance. 1 INTRODUCTION Resonator fiber optic gyros (R-FOGs) having a high finesse fiber ring resonator have been studied as a next generation fiber optic gyro based on the Sagnac effect2'3. The rotation rate is measured from the resonance frequency difference due to the Sagnac effect between the clockwise (CW) andthe counter-clockwise (CCW) light waves in the resonator. The sensitivity can be enhanced by the amount of the finesse compared with interferometer fiber optic gyros (I-FOGs), and about 5m ofthe fiber length is enough to achieve a high grade. However, there are several noise sources in the R-FOG, which are under studies. Polarization fluctuation is one of the dominant noise sources.A fiber ring resonator has two special states of polarization (SOPs) that do not change their SOPs
