Abstract

This study aims to develop a practical and accurate prediction method for the added resistance of ships in regular wave conditions. To this end, the SNU formula proposed by Yang et al. (2018a) is enhanced for the diffraction-induced added resistance of ships in short waves with arbitrary wave headings. Notably, the SNU formula is simplified without loss of accuracy for its application in practical problems. Radiation-induced added resistance in long waves is predicted using the SNNM formula proposed by Liu and Papanikolaou (2016, 2020), and Wang et al. (2021). The two formulas are combined with a proper blending function. To validate the developed method, various tank-test data of existing ship models are collected, and a systematic comparative study including statistical analysis is performed. In particular, the accuracy of the developed numerical method is discussed considering the effects of ship speed and wave heading angle. Based on the present study, the reliability and fidelity of the proposed enhanced method are expressed by considering a variety of physics of added resistance.
