Abstract

Abstract The coarsening of a liquid foam inside a tube was experimentally studied. A bamboo structure develops in the foam and the number of bamboo segments per unit length of the tube was measured as a function of time for various tube diameters. The results are consistent with a power relation dα tn for the time dependence of the average cell diameter d and give n ≈ 0·54. The average length of a bamboo segment in the final bamboo structure was found to be very close to the tube diameter.
