Abstract

An experimental study of 2D foam coarsening leading to a bamboo structure is presented. The foams were prepared by a new technique, in which the foam bubbles bridge between the liquid surface and a parallel glass plate at a short distance. The foam was formed between two concentric circular walls of separation D. The main result obtained is that the average bamboo segment length, L̄, in the final bamboo structure is L̄ ≅ 1.43D, independent of the liquid fraction in the foam. A simple explanationis provided for this result, based on measurements on 2D computer networks offoams intersected by two parallel lines.
