Abstract

The RISP (Rare Isotope Science Project) in Korea has been building the RAON accelerator that generates and accelerates a wide range of stable ions and rare isotopes for scientific experiments in various fields. For the beams produced by the ion generators like ECR-IS and ISOL in the RAON accelerator, the beam energy reaches 200 MeV/u after passing through the high energy superconducting linear accelerator, and the beam power approaches 400 kW. During the transportation and the acceleration of this kind of beam, the beam loss can lead to the significant damage of the accelerator equipment. For that reason, the fast protection system is required to take mitigating action due to such severe damage occurring within a few tens of microseconds. For the development of this fast protection system in the RAON accelerator, the fast protection system prototype based on an FPGA platform has been developed as a priority, and the prototype test is in progress. Here we will present the development of the RAON fast protection system prototype and describe the configuration of the prototype and the interlock test results.
