Abstract

A new approach to measuring of residual stresses in railroad wheels is being investigated. High-sensitivity moiré interferometry combined with Michelson interferometry provide full field information about the distribution of displacements around a saw cut notch on both flat surfaces of the rim of a wheel. The accuracy of the measurements is better than 100 nm. Additional discrete gauges provide information about the absolute displacements of the points on the rim with respect to the center of the wheel.
