Abstract

Cultural awareness is linked with improved patient outcomes across populations but can be challenging for nurse educators to teach. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a multimodal strategy for increasing cultural awareness in prelicensure nursing students using a quasi-experimental, mixed-methods design. Following implementation of curricular revisions, analysis of the Cultural Competence Self-Assessment Checklist was completed for a sample of 106 students. Results were statistically significant across all areas and analysis of reflective writing resulted in three major themes. Designing cultural awareness learning activities should be a major focus of nurse educators.
