Abstract

Theories of charismatic leadership suggest that leader characteristics are important components of firm success and follower satisfaction. However, environment effects are largely ignored in examinations of the impact that charismatic leadership has on organizational outcomes. In an effort to provide evidence of the effects of charismatic leadership in a dynamic environment, an empirical study is conducted looking specifically at player recruitment, development, and performance in the dynamic environment of college athletics. Findings indicate that charismatic leaders have a positive impact on the recruitment, performance, and development of players over the course of their tenure. Explanations for additional findings are provided and suggestions for future research are identified as well.
