Abstract

Abstract Adoption today is frequently used as a provision for older children, or children with special needs, who cannot live with their family of origin. Research indicates that adoptive families may need a wide range of services long after the adoption order has been granted. This ongoing support has resource implications for Local Authorities, and at present post adoption services are patchy and underdeveloped. We describe the various elements that make up a comprehensive post adoption service for adoptive families such as self-help networks, dissemination of information, counselling and therapeutic input, training programmes and practical help. Against a background of shortage of resources we raise questions about the future organisation of post adoption services.
