Abstract

In comparison with protons deuterons show several advantageous features when used to induce X-ray emission for elemental analysis, such as lower bremsstrahlung radiation, higher penetration range and reduction of the charge collected in the target. On the other hand, a high background due to scattering on the chamber material was observed. Beam loss ratios in samples of different thicknesses are presented for deuterons of 4.2 MeV and for the equivalent protons of 2.1 MeV. An extensive study of atmospheric aerosols using 4.2 MeV deuterons is described.
