Abstract

In 1934 Hall et al. found that the lower critical solution temperature of water + nicotine decreased and the upper critical solution temperature of water + phenol increased as the D 2O content of the water was increased. Subsequently there have been many studies of deuterium isotope effects in liquid—liquid phase diagrams. These are reviewed in this paper.
