Abstract
For an M 1 or E 1 nuclear gamma resonance transition with quadrupole splitting, the intensity of a given component in the powder absorption spectrum can be written as Ij=Bj2+(Cj2+Dj2)F/2+CjDjG, where Bj, Cj, Dj are functions only of η, the asymmetry parameter, and F and G are integrals, depending on the vibrational anisotropy at the nuclear site. The integrals F and G have been evaluated numerically over a range of vibrational anisotropy. The use of the resulting tables to obtain quantitative information on vibrational anisotropy from a Mössbauer absorption spectrum is considered for both the 3/2–1/2 and 7/2–5/2 transitions.
