Abstract
The thermodynamic and physicochemical properties of 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([OMIM]PF 6 ) were investigated by inverse gas chromatography from 343.15 K to 373.15 K. Two groups of solvents with different chemical natures and polarities were used to characterize [OMIM]PF 6 –solvent interactions. The specific retention volume, molar heat of sorption, weight fraction activity coefficient, partial molar heat of mixing, Flory–Huggins interaction parameter between [OMIM]PF 6 and the tested solvents, as well as activity coefficients at infinite dilution were determined. The solubility parameters of [OMIM]PF 6 were also determined by plotting the graph of δ 1 2 /( RT ) − χ 12 ∞ / V 1 versus the solubility parameter δ 1 of the probes. The specific retention volumes of the probes:■ n -C 6 ; ● n -C 7 ; ▲ n -C 8 ; ▼ n -C 9 ; ◄ benzene; ► toluene; ◆ m -xylene; ★cyclohexane on the [OMIM]PF 6 , V g 0 , obtained experimentally from the IGC measurements between 343.15 K and 373.15 K, the values of In V g 0 decrease linearly with the temperature from 343.15 K to 373.15 K. • Ionic liquids (ILs) applied in many fields are mainly based on the unique physical and chemical properties. • The physical and chemical parameters of the ILs could provide the theoretical guidance to their applications. • Inverse gas chromatography was developed to characterize [OMIM]PF 6 . • The thermodynamics were used to judge the interaction between [OMIM]PF 6 and solvents. • The solubility parameter of [OMIM]PF 6 was determined.
