Abstract
The line of Hg ii located at 5677.10 Å and the commonly used line at 3983.93 Å are not detected in UVES and ELODIE spectra of 53 Tau. The synthesis of selected lines of twenty chemical elements yields new abundance determinations for this sharp-lined star. Helium, carbon, oxygen, magnesium, aluminum, silicon, sulfur, scandium and iron are underabundant. Sodium has a solar abundance while phosphorus, calcium, titanium, chromium, manganese, strontium, ytrium, zirconium, xenon and barium are overabundant. The abundance excesses/deficiencies agree with previous determinations for aluminum, chromium, manganese, iron and strontium.
