Abstract

A simple experimental procedure involving measurement of strain through strain gages, has been developed to determine mode I stress intensity factor in orthotropic composites. Theoretical equations are first developed for the strain field in the vicinity of the crack tip in an orthotropic material. These equations are then critically evaluated to obtain the optimum location and orientation of the strain gages to be used for strain measurements. Applicability of the procedure has been experimentally verified through measurements on a glass epoxy specimen.
