Abstract

Theoretical expressions for the relations between particle sizes and strains in deformed polycrystallites, determined by line-shape, line-width and variance analysis of x-ray diffraction profiles, have been derived for the cases where the actual strain distribution is of Cauchy or Gauss type. Numerical computations based on these expressions show that in general the three different methods yield different values of particle sizes and strains. The possibility that the values obtained should be equal is small but is not to be ruled out completely.
