Abstract

We hypothesize that the transition of ventricular hypertrophy to heart failure induced by chronic hypertension is caused by the development of cardiomyocyte hypoxia. Hypoxia may occur due to increased oxygen diffusion distances in hypertrophied myocardium, reduced oxygen supply and increased myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2). Any reduction in myocardial efficiency will increase MVO2. Little is known of the effect of hypertrophy on myocardial efficiency.
