Abstract

A novel test method for measuring the Poisson’s ratio of asphalt binders using a Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) equipped with a linear drive is presented. The paper describes the preparation of homogeneous and isotropic cylindrical binder specimens, their loading into the DSR, and the subsequent measurement of the absolute complex shear modulus |G*|, and the complex elastic modulus |E*|. Both moduli are obtained from the same specimen so the complex Poisson’s ratio, |υ*|, can be measured indirectly as a function of temperature and frequency. This is illustrated for three different samples of plain asphalt binders: hard 30/45 binder, standard 50/70 binder, and soft 70/100 binder.
