Abstract
One of the major advantages of using mass spectrometry to analyze biomolecules is the structural information obtained from characteristic fragment ions, in addition to molecular weight information. This structural information facilitates the rapid determination of known compounds and the structural elucidation of unknown compounds. such as previously undetermined metabolites. The coupling of mass spectrometry to other separation techniques, such as liquid chromatography or tandem mass spectrometry, provides an additional dimension to the analysis. In this work, we review our combination of liquid chromatography and thermospray ionization mass spectrometry to (I) the analysis of a class of antibiotics, the penicillins and their metabolites, and (II) the analysis of peptides by using an on-line enzymatic digestion.
