Abstract

There is no need for a catalyst in the potentiometric or spectrophotometric titration of antimony(III) with chromium(VI). The failure of titrations using indicators is due to slowness of the oxidized indicator-Sb(III) reaction; the indicator reaction can be catalysed by iodine. The spectrophotometric titration yields accurate results, and shows that the Sb(III)-Cr(VI) reaction is rapid. Slowness in the potentiometric titration is due to unfavourable electrode kinetics.
