Abstract
The temperature dependences of the critical shear stress τ0 and the sensitivity of the stress to the strain rate ∂τ/∂Inϵ have been studied over the temperature range from 0.5 to 4.4° K on single crystals of high-purity tin. We have found that below 1° K both τ0 and ∂τ/∂Inϵ do not depend on the temperature. Activation analysis has shown that the classical Arrhenius rate equation does not hold below 1° K. The results obtained are interpreted as a manifestation of quantum effects that occur in tin below 1° K.
