Abstract

An analytical strategy is described for the detection and assessment of trace metal pollution in marine sediments and biota based on ICAP and conventional AAS multi-element analyses. The method is discussed in relation to marine pollution research in Kuwait and the environmental research needs of other rapidly developing countries. The advantages of the ICAP system for rapid trace metal pollution assessment are presented and specific case studies utilizing a multi-element approach are reviewed. The results obtained during a comprehensive investigation indicate that trace metal pollution in Kuwait is generally limited to the major industrial and urban centers.
