Abstract

Destinations rise and fall in popularity, and that pattern has given rise to the theory of the destination life cycle, which posits that each destination will enjoy a period of great growth followed by a period of stability and then one of decline. The decline occurs for many reasons, but improper maintenance of that destination is certainly one of them. On the other hand, maintaining the attractions of a destination would allow that destination to extend its popularity. A case in point is Schnebly Hill Road, a popular picnic spot amid the beautiful and dramatic scenery near Sedona, Arizona. Already experiencing degradation, Schnebly Hill will cease to be attractive to most visitors unless it is accorded some kind of protection. Moreover, the damage done to Schnebly Hill will reflect negatively on Sedona and the entire area.
